JOHN HENRY HALTER PACKAGE

John Henry was your horse and my horse. He was a horse for the ages. What made him so special was that he represented all walks of life. Anyone could relate to John Henry, from fans at America's bush tracks to fans at its most majestic race places. If ever the game had an ambassador in our lifetime, it was not any hired human or public figure, but rather a culturally binding animal named John Henry, for whom we could all stand and cheer. John Henry was a horse of dubious conformation and humble breeding who began his career at small-time Louisiana tracks. He retired with 83 starts, 39 wins, 15 seconds, and 9 thirds with $6,591,860 in earnings. He won 7 Eclipse Awards from 1980-1984, including Horse of the Year twice. At the time of his retirement, he was the leading money-earning Thoroughbred of all time. John Henry's retirement home was the Kentucky Horse Park, where he passed away on October 8, 2007. He was buried on the night of his passing in front of the Hall of Champions, at a spot in front of his paddock. A memorial service was held at the Park on October 19. In addition to a halter worn by the legend with a certificate of authenticity, the package includes a framed print of John Henry and The Bart in the 1981 Arlington Million. With the world watching, John Henry burnt his legacy into the minds of anyone who watched that race. He didn't just win the inaugural Arlington Million and its jackpot payoff, he provided theater. Eighth of 12 early on, the then-6-year-old gelding rallied furiously through the stretch to nip The Bart by a nose in a race that camera angles bely the official order of finish and racing fans still debate the winner. That performance marked the turning point in John Henry’s rags-to-riches career.
